Hi! What’s your name and where do you call home?
I’m Ana Bowe. I grew up in Newark, Delaware, but I moved to NYC summer 2018.
What do you do for a living?
I’m currently a full-time student pursuing a master’s in Organizational Psychology at Columbia University. Prior to grad school, I worked as a management consultant at a boutique financial service consulting firm. In my free time, I love traveling, making herbal concoctions (teas, pills, tinctures), dogsitting, making macrame creations, and playing cards. I’m heading to Turkey for a month in August with my boyfriend to visit his family!
Why did you start using organic skincare?
As an undergrad, I had to read the book What’s Gotten Into Us? Staying Healthy in a Toxic World by McKay Jenkins. It walks the reader through a rabbit hole of how toxic something as simple as aluminum foil may be. I also had just recently turned vegan after watching the documentary Food Inc, so I was learning a lot of new information at once. The book and documentary made me question what I expose my body to – inside and out. Ever since then (age 19 / 2011), I started using organic skincare products containing only ingredients I could pronounce. Helichrysum and echinacea took a while to learn, but we made it.
Do you choose organic products and foods in other aspects of your life?
Ironically enough, I was known as the junk food queen growing up (doughnuts for breakfast were a staple in the Bowe household). With the help of my hippie neighbors drinking freshly squeezed carrot-ginger juice out of baby bottles and endless research that began when my mom was diagnosed with cancer in high school, I started supporting organic farming practices. There are certain exceptions I’ll make such as Trader Joe’s avocados (because they’re so inexpensive compared to others in the city) and a conventionally grown banana in the Bangkok airport, but I strive to eat organic food as often as possible.
How did you discover Kindred Skincare Co. and why do you like it?
I met Frances at an outdoor farmer’s market at Terrain in PA a few years ago. I’ve always had dry skin, especially in the winter, so I was immediately intrigued by the idea of oil cleansing. I drink 1/2-1 gallon of water per day and a plant-based diet, so I knew I was hydrated internally yet struggled with dry patches on my face. I started using Kindred regularly the following winter and have been so happy with it ever since. I don’t have dry patches anymore, and I’ve never been more comfortable than now to leave the house with a bare face.
What are some skin issues that concern you, i.e. acne, fine lines, sun care, etc?
I’m definitely a sun worshipper, so skin damage from the sun concerns me. I usually justify the face tan by saying my body created a lot of vitamin D, but I definitely need to prioritize preserving my youthful skin. My primary skin issue was dryness, but oil cleansing has really changed that for me.
If you can pick just one, which Kindred product is your favorite (so far!)?
My favorite Kindred product is the Intense Moisture (surprise, surprise) because it saves my face from the NYC winters. The wind feels as if it’s stabbing your face with a million needles (not in a relaxing acupuncture type of way). I also love the polish cleanse and clay mask used as a combo for an at-home facial.
What changes in your skin have you noticed since starting Kindred?
I think I covered this in previous questions, but my dry patches have been gone since using Kindred regularly. My skin has more of a dewy glow now that I use oils so regularly.
Why did you want to be a Kindred Ambassador?
My friends and family have already laughed when I told them I’m a Kindred Ambassador because I’ve been promoting the company ever since I started using the products years ago. Some have even received Kindred products for their birthday or Christmas presents. I hope to encourage people to question what’s in their skin care products just like I already (and probably annoyingly) do with their food and cleaning products.
Who’s the first person you introduced Kindred Skincare to when you started using it?
The night I bought the Cleansing Core with the Oil Cleanse, Morning Moisture, and Nightly Nourish, I convinced my boyfriend to do the skincare routine with me. We spent the next 30 minutes admiring the smoothness of our faces in the mirror (maybe that was just me, but I’m throwing him under the bus so I don’t sound so weird/vain).
If you could gift Kindred’s skincare line to one person, who would it be?
My friend Laura Bellefontaine who is currently a new mom while in chiropractic school in SC!
