Cleansing skin with oil-based products isn’t anything new, but it can be confusing when the market is saturated with beauty products that promote drying soaps and harsh chemical ingredients. Kindred Skincare isn’t about that. Kindred products are lovingly handcrafted in small batches with organic ingredients designed to work with the natural processes of your skin for clarity, hydration, and nourishment. To help spread the knowledge about the benefits of cleansing with oil, our founder Frances Thrasher answered your most-asked questions.
People think they need “strong stuff” to combat their skin issues. Why is that an incorrect assumption?
We are too tough on our bodies and when we use harsh products we’re overly affecting the outer layer of the skin, stripping oils, and creating oiliness that we may not have had in the first place. Using harsh chemicals cause more problems then they resolve. The organic ingredients we use are not only gentler but are more effective than chemical-based products.
Why does it matter if I use organic products on my skin?
Organic products guarantee that you aren’t putting chemicals into your body. Organic ingredients are pure, healthy, and good for you. We’re proud to say that most of our products are organic, with the exception of our Serum Magique which does contain non-organic ingredients.
What sets Kindred apart from other organic beauty brands?
We’re all oil-based. We believe in oil. We are hand-batched and always will be. My chemical based background allowed me to use the science of nature to create effective, oil-based cleansers and moisturizers that really work. Every product is a problem-solving product and was created for a specific reason. We’re a very thoughtful brand, putting positive energy into every package. I wanted to create an organic skincare line that nurtured the skin while lifting the mind, body, and spirit. It’s the embodiment of everything I believe in.
How do oil-based products affect already oily skin?
I receive this question A LOT! My first question is about your face and routine: are you waking up with oily patches? Are you using a lot of harsh scrubs? Strong topicals? Acne treatments? Because at the end of the day you may not have “oily skin,” but skin that is feeling overly dry on the surface and trying to compensate. Once you start using oil-based products your skin will find a more content equilibrium and actually produce less oil. Therefore, your surface oiliness will subside. Also, we find that once someone is using oil cleansing consistently that their pores will appear smaller since once again the skin is not compensating for the dryness.
What skincare regime do you recommend for acne prone skin?
Very often acne prone skin is also very dry from the topical treatments that contain drying agents. Our products can help minimize or in some cases eliminate acne altogether! Using the Blemish Cleanse, with the high levels of linoleic acid and tea tree oil, can help minimize the dermatitis aspects. A gentle exfoliation twice a week with Polish Cleanse will help minimize the dry skin that can harbor bacteria and create acne. The citrus peel, castor oil and willow bark oil (a natural source of salicylic acid) can help reduce breakouts and clear problem skin. For actively treating breakouts, I recommend our Clay Mask. The bentonite clay and botanicals will deep clean and the kaolin will help with redness. For problem weeks, mix up one of the packets and store in the refrigerator in a Ziploc bag for up to three days and use the clay as a spot treatment every day for 15 minutes until the bumps are gone. For moisture, the anti-fungal and antibacterial properties of the Intense Moisture are perfect at night to help with both acne and acne scarring.
What are your top product recommendations for treating common skin issues?
If you have a combination of these skin ailments, many of the products overlap and will work together to give the best skin possible.
