Why We Shop by Room at Stags Head Retreat
By Frances Thrasher
Why Do We Shop by Room?
It's a fair question.
Most shops organize things by category.
Jewelry here.
Candles there.
Skincare somewhere else.
But Stags Head Retreat was never meant to be a shop.
A year ago, I began building a small world where every object had a story and every collection belonged somewhere.
It started because I wanted to make jewelry again.
Not simply sell jewelry.
Create stories around it.
Somewhere between David Sedaris, Lewis Grizzard, Wes Anderson, and the pages of a well-worn J. Peterman catalog, the idea emerged that perhaps the proprietor of this peculiar estate should not be me at all.
Instead, Stags Head Retreat would be inhabited by a cast of residents, each with their own interests, collections, obsessions, and treasures.
The Atelier came first.
Then my sister announced she wanted a resident inspired by what she affectionately calls an old "party goblin" and a place to house her beloved straw bags. Thus another room appeared.
My son helped build the world further and created The Library.
My husband decided he should have a room of his own, which naturally became The Whiski Room.
My mother joined the estate.
My brother-in-law arrived with a fondness for tweed.
And suddenly the Retreat began to feel inhabited.
Then the story became more meaningful.
Two beloved husbands passed away, leaving behind collections too wonderful and too personal to simply be listed for sale.
Jules gave us The Angler's Barge, where a lifetime of fly-fishing treasures could continue their journey.
Sir Rupert inspired The Butler's Pantry, home to an extraordinary collection of silver gathered from around the world over many decades.
The Tack Room was inevitable.
Any estate built by a horsewoman, surrounded by dogs, cats, ponies, mud, boots, and equestrian pursuits could hardly exist without one.
The Guest Cottage was created for friends whose treasures occasionally arrive at the estate.
And finally, there needed to be a quieter place.
A place for my daughter's wedding, reflection, faith, memory, and collected thoughts.
The Chapel.
So when you shop by room, you are not simply browsing products.
You are wandering through an estate, meeting its residents, and discovering the collections they have gathered along the way.
Welcome to Stags Head Retreat.
