Delaware Today – June 2017

What is your background?
I went to Georgia Tech and earned a degree in textile engineering. I was a materials science engineer and my skin was overexposed to chemicals. Then, once I had my children, my hormones intensified everything. I had thyroid issues and dry skin. I wanted a cure so I started using olive oil. People have been using oil to clean their skin for thousands of years. I started with the chemistry of things, researched other oils and began blending things. I eventually started making my own stuff. I was living in Atlanta at the time and I gave my friend who is a facial plastic surgeon who was pregnant at the time some of my skincare and she loved it. She said to me, “You have to sell this—my patients love this and want to know why my skin looks so good!”

When did Kindred Skincare Co. officially launch? What was your first product?
My family moved to Delaware in 2014 and I launched Kindred Skincare Co. in November of 2015. My first product was the oil cleanse, which contains castor oil. Castor oil helps reduce pigmentation and can help with scar reduction.

What are some of the featured ingredients in your products?
Castor oil, fractionated coconut oil (enhanced antioxidant and disinfecting properties), grapeseed oil (helps reduce free radicals and promote collagen restoration), lavender oil (helps with acne) and evening primrose (reduces inflammation and is good for acne, eczema, psoriasis and rosacea). All of the ingredients that I use are listed on my website.

How did you come up with the packaging for your products?
I had a clear idea of my packaging from the beginning. I wanted my products to look like they came from an apothecary and to not look too feminine. I also wanted the list of ingredients to be clear and to be listed on every bottle. All of the tubes and bottles I use are made in Michigan, the printer I use for my labels is located in Pennsylvania and the labels come from North Carolina. I make all the products myself and I handbadge everything in my shop in Centreville.

What has been the best part about starting your own organic skincare line?
People have seen amazing results. I get calls from people telling me their rosacea has been cured. My polish cleanse just won a Gorgeously Green Beauty Award for best scrub. In March, I won three Beauty Shortlist Awards for my Oil Cleanse, Body Oil and Morning Moisture. The Beauty Shortlist is a U.K. Beauty Blog that judges labels big and small.

What are some of your best-selling products?
The oil cleanse (facial cleanser); nightly nourish (moisturizer) and the body oil (daily moisturizer).

Where are your products sold?
Houppette (both locations), The Inn & Spa at Montchanin, Terrain in Glen Mills, Pa., and The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. More recently my products are now available in stores in Florida, Oregon and New York, as well as Blackberry Farm in Tennessee.
